Haverford will try to be as successful as they were last year. Last year, they lost to Massachusetts-Boston in the second round. Many players graduated, including Tejan Walcott, Maclyn Willigan, and Will Corkery. Tejan was 1st in assists, and shots, and 3rd in goals, shots on goal, and points. He also was All-Centennial Conference as an honorable mention. Captain Maclyn Willigan, who was All-Centennial Conference First Team last year, graduated with a total of 73 games played. All-Centennial Conference Second Team midfielder Will Corkery will leave the other captain spot open. They opened their season against Cabrini with a 3-0 win, with their new captains, Ben Field, Russell Nicholson, and Dorian Wirz. And yes, Haverford also had a trip (2 years ago) to Costa Rica, where they enjoyed waterfalls outside of their hotel.

Swarthmore graduated 3 players. Key defensive player Michael Swantek, who played in 3 shutouts, graduated with an injury. He could not finish the season due to an injury, so on senior day, all players had "Swanny" on the back of their shirts. They also lost Billy Evers, who had two multiple-goal games, and a multiple-assists game. Finally, they lost All-Centennial Confrence Second Team defender Ryan Meuth. Meuth, despite his position, managed to get two goals and 17 shots. Michael Nafziger, who led the team in points and goals, is staying, along with the leader in assists, Tommy Sheehan, The best part was the off season. The garnet went international, with a visit to Spain, including a visit to the 'El Clasico' at Camp Nou (FC Barcelona's stadium) for Supercopa de Espana game 1. They also toured Espanyol's training facility. Currently, the Garnet are playing in in the Garnet Alumni Classic. 8-6-2
7 people graduated last year, so 10 freshmen are on the 2017 roster. CJ Serratore, All-CSAC First Team goalkeeper graduated with star defensive player Ryan New. Mike Gould, who started as goalkeeper for the opener against Haverford, will most likely be the starter for most of the season. They picked up 3 defensive players and a keeper to fill he important roles they lost. They also lost Bobby Kane, second in points and goals, and AJ Bishop, first in points and goals, second in assists. The leader in assists, with 9, Ben Roda is staying. Last year, They lost in the final of the CSAC tournament and in the first round of ECAC tournament. This year, they have a chance to make it to the D3 tournament, like Haverford did. 9-6-2
Penn recruited 11 new players, despite the fact that only 3 players left! The team has a total of 12 midfielders, including 6 freshmen. They lost Alec Neumann, the leading scorer and leader in points. They also lost backup goalkeeper Nick Savino, but starter Etan Mabourakh returns. They will keep both the leader in assists, Joe Swenson, and the player who was 2nd in points, Sam Wancowicz. Their schedule includes three opponents they have never faced in the history of Penn. This includes Monmouth, Bowling Green, and SIU-Edwardsville. 8-6-2
Drexel is definitely excited about the 7 freshmen they acquired, but not happy about the 4 seniors they lost. Tyler Afflerbach, the only goalkeeper that played last year, is gone. Now, the goalkeeper spot could be filled by a player from three different classes: Jacob Jordan, the junior; Stephen Kopsachilis, the freshman; and Cameron Sanders, the sophomore. Jordan has only appeared in nine total games, all as a freshman, and is the only one with college experience. Star defenseman Jameson Detweiler graduated last year. Unfortunately, he was the only Drexel player to make the 2016 Soccer Six All-Star Team. Colin McCglynn, the leader in goals, assists, shots on goal, and points returns. Drexel is ready for 2017, but they have tough games. September 23rd is the game against Penn. Last year, they lost 5-0, and this game turned into a fight- from slide tackles to insults. 9-7-2
La Salle is in a weird position. 7 people left, so they don't have a leader. Because of that, 7 new players will have to learn La Salle play. Rob Irvine, the coach, is entering his second season. Rob Irvine's 2016 record, 10-8-2, was an improvement over Pat Farrell's 2015 6-10-2. Without leadership, it will be hard for La Salle to succeed. They will look toward the juniors and seniors to find a way to play that fits La Salle. Matt Robinson, who leads the team in points, goals, and assists is returning for his final year. 9-1-17 Haverford @ Cabrini

Nova made it to last years D1 tournament. This year? Maybe. Last year, Max Kroshwitz did something unique. We've seen redshirt freshmen, redshirt seniors, and redshirt juniors, but I've never seen a grad school player. Max Kroshwitz was a grad school player until he got injured, and received a medical redshirt, so hes back this year. Six players graduated last year, including goalkeeper Kieran Mccarthy, Seven freshmen are on the squad, including Max Zandi, cousin of Zach Zandi, a sophomore midfielder. Miguel Polley, who led in goals, shots on goal, assists, and game winning goals, will stay as a key player on the team. Lucas Hodges, who came in 2nd in many key stats will stay on the team. Of the players that graduated, Padriac McCullaugh, who led the team in shots, is a key loss. After losing Padriac, they need a leader to fill his spot. Andres Bartosinski is a good contender, for example he was named to the All-Big East Preseason All-Star Team. Prediction: 6-8-2
The Widener Pride are only losing 2 players, but both played important roles. Captain Tommy O'Keefe, All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Second team graduated, leaving an open midfield spot. Goalkeeper Dave Sousa, who holds the Widener single-season shutout record (8), will be an important spot to replace. Backup keeper Jordan Katz, who only started in 1 game (it went into overtime) will be the starter unless they can find another goalie. Returning will be captain Doug Kunkle, for his final season, so he is a player to watch. As the season gets nearer, I expect to see a lot of goalkeeper competition. Once they post their roster, look for who becomes the captain and the starting goalkeeper. Antonio Marchio, a sophomore, will pick up the role he excelled at last year- defender. Kevin Mckenna, who led the team in goals and points, will return as well. Dylan Pratzner (Shots and shots on goal) and Justin O'Brien (assists), two other category leaders, will also return, for 2017 and 2018! Only Doug Kunkle and John Colbert will leave after the 2017 season. |
